Discovering The Now

So much of our time onstage is wasted – explaining what’s happening, instead of experiencing it. Talking about the past or the future. Stuck in safe premises, with familiar characters who don’t feel much of anything at all. This 3-hour workshop will combine scene diagnostics with simple tricks and tips that allow you to discover your scene’s “script” in the moment.  Let’s focus less on what should be happening, and instead enjoy the fun thing that you’re already doing.

Pre-requisite: Six months of improv experience. If you are unsure if this class would be a good fit for you, please contact Rachelle Goulter at outreach@vtsl.com.

  • Date: Tuesday 19th November
  • Time: 7 pm – 10 pm
  • Location: Carousel Theatre for Young People (Studio A) Granville Island
  • Cost: $49

Make It Spicy (An Advanced Diagnostic Workshop)

You’ve already taken a bunch of classes. You’ve performed in shows. Maybe you’re already playing Friday night shows on the Mainstage. Sometimes you deliver scenes that feel like magic. And other times you just feel STUCK. You’re repeating the same characters and bits over and over again, to an audience who already knows your tired tricks… Your teacher or coach keeps giving you positive reinforcement, but you still feel like there’s something missing… In this masterclass, you’ll find out what’s missing through diagnostics, analysis, and critique. This workshop offer allows students to choose their own intensity of feedback (and honesty)

1) Mild – Encouraging, warm, and positive. Traditional feedback students might receive in a typical improv workshop.

2) Medium – Challenging, constructive, and technical analysis. This feedback would be typical coaching provided for a premiere Harold team. Players are experts or coaches themselves and are looking for a critical eye on their work.

3) Spicy – This level is for the improviser who are more interested in working hard and finding their weak spots, than having fun in a workshop. These notes are consistent with a highly competitive atmosphere – such as a Second City performance – where you are expected to be the best at what you do.

Pre-requisite: This workshop is open to all INTERMEDIATE and ADVANCED levels of players. Must be comfortable with open scene work and have a thorough understanding of the basics of improv. If you are unsure if this class would be a good fit for you, please contact Rachelle Goulter at outreach@vtsl.com.
