The Bechdel Test is a set of criteria created by feminist cartoonist and author Allison Bechdel. It asks: Does a work of fiction have at least one scene in it where two women talk about something other than a man? The remarkably low percentage of films and stories that pass this test points to the fact that we all have grown accustomed to creating and seeing stories centering around men. And as story creators we often perpetuate that pattern.
Debuting on the main stage at BATS in August 2016, the Bechdel test format aims to explore the complexities, relationships, and stories of women. Simply deciding to make stories whose main characters are women – good, bad, likeable and not – is a departure from the stories that we often consume and create!

This show is an International TheatreSports Festival performance:
The Improv World is coming to VTS from October 14 – 20 when we will be playing host to the International TheatreSports Institute (iTi) Conference and Festival. The iTi is the largest improv network in the world. Every two years they convene a conference and improv festival that brings together improvisers from around the globe. The theme of this year’s festival is ImproV Ecology in recognition of how the improv art form has evolved around the world to reflect the influences it receives from different cultural terroirs. The Festival showcases improv formats created by iTi founder Keith Johnstone (e.g. Theatresports™, Gorilla Theatre™, Maestro Impro™ and The Life Game™), along with signature performances by some of the visiting international delegates and companies. All shows will take place on Granville Island. In addition to our own theatre, The Improv Centre, we will also be performing at the Waterfront Theatre and at the Nest Studio Theatre – all three venues are only a short walk apart from each other.
