Watch as improvisers create exciting new stories and parallel worlds that will change the way we see the spaces around us.

Directed by Felipe Ortiz (Colombia) & Patti Stiles (Australia)

This show is an elegant excavation of the unexpected secrets that places hold. Improvisers take inspiration from these treasure troves of memory and craft surprising and delightful worlds. Join us for an engaging and emotive show that unearths personal stories and comedic treasures! Lugares (places) invites members of the audience to describe a special setting, such as a house of a grandparent or a car you commute in. The improvisers create exciting new stories and parallel worlds that will change the way we see the spaces around us, and connect us to our own personal places. This is improvised theatre that is crafty, challenging and adventurous.

Lugares – a result of an international collaboration – was created by Felipe Ortiz (Colombia), Patti Stiles (Australia), Jim Libby (Austria), Mike Kennard (Canada) and Sarah Michaelson (Canada).

This show is an International TheatreSports Festival performance:

The Improv World is coming to VTS from October 14 – 20 when we will be playing host to the International TheatreSports Institute (iTi) Conference and Festival. The iTi is the largest improv network in the world. Every two years they convene a conference and improv festival that brings together improvisers from around the globe. The theme of this year’s festival is ImproV Ecology in recognition of how the improv art form has evolved around the world to reflect the influences it receives from different cultural terroirs. The Festival showcases improv formats created by iTi founder Keith Johnstone (e.g. Theatresports™, Gorilla Theatre™, Maestro Impro™ and The Life Game™), along with signature performances by some of the visiting international delegates and companies. All shows will take place on Granville Island. In addition to our own theatre, The Improv Centre, we will also be performing at the Waterfront Theatre and at the Nest Studio Theatre – all three venues are only a short walk apart from each other.
