Looking for Team Building ideas in Vancouver?
Here at Vancouver TheatreSports, we’ve been creating team building experiences in Vancouver (and throughout BC) for over 15 years, with our popular improv-based Team Building sessions. (contact Jeff at firstname.lastname@example.org if you’d like to learn more about our team building activities).
Working with our clients (and for that matter, planning a variety of our own activities here with the Vancouver TheatreSports staff) we’re well aware that organizing team building activities can be tricky. Depending on what you choose, the response is as likely to produce an eye roll as a cheer.
We recently did a 2-hour Team Building session with one of our clients from the local Vancouver tech sector. We’ve been working with them focusing on increasing collaboration within each department, but also across departments (and creating an environment where everyone feels confident contributing, knowing their ideas will be accepted and built on by teammates).
During the session follow-up, we got on the topic of other team building ideas in Vancouver they’d tried and were a success.
I thought I’d share a few of them
A unique experience. From cultural walks, to ocean kayaking, fishing and a First Nations Cultural Interpretive Paddle.
They did the ocean kayaking and loved it.
2) Shark Tank
Anyone familiar with the show (or Dragon’s Den) will have a pretty good idea of what this is about.
Putting on your own “Shark Tank” pitch format will give team members a chance to work together, collaborate, create and share some laughter.
How to set it up:
– break the team into groups of anywhere from two to six.
– task each group to come up with an imaginary product or service and prepare a pitch for investment.
– the pitch should include a brand name, slogan, marketing ideas, some financial projections and how much money they’re looking for and what they’re willing to give for the investment.
– choose three or four “Sharks” to ask questions and decide whether they invest or not. Give each one an equal pool of money for their investing.
You can show a few clips of Shark Tank before starting to get everyone in the right frame of mind.
This should promote teamwork, as well can inspire big-thinking.
We’ve never done this activity here at Vancouver TheatreSports, but it sounds like a lot of fun. We’re also fortunate to have a beautiful theatre set-up, perfect for a TV style set-up.
3) Back-to-Back Drawing
Great for teamwork and communication skills.
You’ll need markers/pens and paper. Also, pictures of a simple image.
Here’s how it works: split your group into pairs.
Each pair sits back-to-back in chairs.
One member of the team gets one of the pictures and the other has the pen and paper. The teammate with the picture will then give their partner verbal instructions on how to draw the picture, obviously without telling them what it is (e.g. “it’s an egg-shape”, or “it’s the Eiffel Tower”).
After a set amount of time, each set of partners will see what they drew and how close they were to replicating the picture.
Our office is doing this in June as a Team Building event.
We’re combining a shoreline clean-up with a low-waste picnic at the beach and a robust Bocce Ball tournament to follow.
The Great Canadian Shoreline Clean-up has been around for over 20 years. It’s a great initiative run by the Vancouver Aquarium and WWF-Canada.
It’s very easy to register, pick a shoreline in your area and organize the team to head out and pick up litter.
Teamwork, a positive environmental impact – a great way to spend time with colleagues.
We’ll add another list of Team Building Ideas in Vancouver next month, adding a few more tips from our clients.
Vancouver TheatreSports offers several unique Team Building packages. All are custom designed specifically for your group, but areas we often focus on are increasing collaboration, unleashing a team’s innovation and creativity, creating an environment where team members actively seek ways to support each other, how to build on mistakes as a team, embracing the unpredictable and managing change.
